Come Alive

Updated: Sep 29

I watched The Greatest Showman for the first time about a month ago with my husband, and immediately we were both hooked. We showed it to our kids, and now we can’t stop having family sing-a-longs to the soundtrack. My kids belt out, “A Million Dreams,” because they relate to the kids singing and dreaming of what their life might one day be. I soak in the whole soundtrack, but the other day I noticed the song, “Come Alive,” really speaking to me. I paused to really listen to the lyrics and it hit me: this is my life with Jesus.

As we watch the movie, it is mostly an embellished tale of P.T. (Phineas Taylor) Barnum’s rise to fame: his start as a poor tailor’s son who perseveres after becoming orphaned, and his dreams that are so big he ends up becoming the famous circus show runner we know today. But what really draws us in to this story is P.T.’s ability to grow people who are normally shoved aside, the people who he lovingly call his “oddities.” We first see him encounter Tom, a little person. Phineas notices him being hidden away by his mother, and he pulls him from the shadows, promising that if he comes with him, people won’t laugh at him anymore, they’ll salute. He gathers many people who live in shame due to their unique differences, a bearded lady, and tattooed man, a 500 lb man, and several others.

I love the scene in the movie is during the song, “Come Alive,” where the whole group begins dancing together, moving toward the audience, marching on to their new lives, leaving behind their shame. They follow Phineas’ lead and boldly begin embracing the unique way they were made. Phineas had a way of pulling away their shame to reveal their confidence [and he totally capitalized on it.]

“They don’t know it yet, but they are gonna love you. Trust me.” -Phineas encourages Lettie before she appears to the audience

We so want for someone to come into our lives like Phineas did for these people, so we can know we are valued and so we can be given the power to be all we can be. We want to be free from our fears, anxieties and our faults. We want to be able to have the strength to do great things. This is the magic of this movie. The trouble is, we tend to think that that’s just what it is, just a story: a make-believe embellishment that could never actually happen to anyone, let alone us.

But we do have someone, THE someone. Jesus came to this earth to set captives free. And he won’t capitalize on our growth. He is a perfect leader who won’t fail us like P.T. eventually failed his oddities.

“The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the LORD’s favor has come. ” ‭Luke‬ ‭4:18-19‬ ‭NLT‬‬

🎵“And the world becomes a fantasy

And you're more than you could ever be 'Cause you're dreaming with your eyes wide open”🎵

Jesus came to rid us of shame, so we don’t have to hide in the shadows. We can come as we are, and as we get to know him, his power can flow through us. We can do things we never thought we were brave enough or bold enough to do. Without the shackles of guilt, we can focus on where we’re heading, not where we’ve been. We can walk with him to where he leads us, and it is not all on us to make the choices and be in control. He is good, and we can trust him.

🎵“And you know you can't go back again

To the world that you were living in

'Cause you're dreaming with your eyes wide open

So, come alive“🎵

Before I really got in relationship with Jesus, I can’t say I felt like I was stumbling through my days, or like a zombie in a maze, as the song says. However, when I flipped the switch and began trusting my life with Jesus, it was like an awakening. I realized that life before him was dark and isolating, and it’s a lot of pressure. Being in relationship with Jesus is like a light that can’t be switched off again, and I wouldn't ever want it to. Jesus wants us to be “reborn,” meaning we die to our old life of needing to be in control, of holding onto our guilt and shame, and of being imprisoned by our sin. He wants us to be reborn into his family, so we can be shaped by him into who we were created to be. “Come alive!”

🎵Come one!

Come all!

You hear the call!

To anyone who's searching for a way to break free🎵

Finally, this is not an exclusive members only club. Jesus wants you now, as you are. You don’t need to change a thing before coming to him. More than anything, he wants you to trust him and get to know him. He wants a relationship with you. No matter what you’ve done, who you are, what religion you are affiliated with, who your family is, where you live, how much money you have, who you love, how you look, and no matter what your circumstances are, he wants YOU.

🎵Come Alive:

You stumble through your days

Got your head hung low

Your sky's a shade of grey

Like a zombie in a maze

You're asleep inside

But you can shake awake

'Cause you're just a dead man walkin'

Thinkin' that's your only option

But you can flip the switch

And brighten up your darkest day

Sun is up and the color's blinding

Take a world and redefine it

Leave behind your narrow mind

You'll never be the same

Come alive, come alive

Go and light your light

Let it burn so bright

Reachin' up to the sky

And it's open wide

You're electrified

And the world becomes a fantasy

And you're more than you could ever be

'Cause you're dreaming with your eyes wide open

And you know you can't go back again

To the world that you were living in

'Cause you're dreaming with your eyes wide open

So, come alive

I see it in your eyes

You believe that lie

That you need to hide your face

Afraid to step outside

So you lock the door

But don't you stay that way

[Lettie Lutz:]

No more living in those shadows

You and me, we know how that goes

[Lord of Leeds:]

'Cause once you see it,

Oh you'll never, never be the same

[Both::]

A little bit of lightnin' strikin'

Bottled up to keep on shinin'

[All::]

You can prove there's more to you

[P.T. Barnum:]

You cannot be afraid

[Ensemble::]

Come alive, come alive

Go and light your light

Let it burn so bright

Reachin' up to the sky

And it's open wide

You're electrified

And the world becomes a fantasy

And you're more than you could ever be

'Cause you're dreaming with your eyes wide open

And we know we can't go back again

To the world that we were living in

'Cause we're dreaming with our eyes wide open

So, come alive!

[Ensemble:]

Come one!

Come all!

Come in!

Come on!

[Anne Wheeler:]

To anyone who's bursting with a dream

Come one!

Come all!

You hear the call!

[P.T. Barnum:]

To anyone who's searching for a way to break free

[Ensemble and P.T. Barnum:]

And the world becomes a fantasy

And you're more than you could ever be

'Cause you're dreaming with your eyes wide open

And we know we can't go back again

To the world that we were living in

'Cause we're dreaming with our eyes wide open

And the world becomes a fantasy

And you're more than you could ever be

'Cause you're dreaming with your eyes wide open

And we know we can't go back again

To the world that we were living in

'Cause we're dreaming with our eyes wide open

'Cause we're dreaming with our eyes wide open

So, come alive! (Come alive!)
